Art Documentary: My Rembrandt

In her new documentary, Oeke Hoogendijk (THE NEW RIJKS MUSEUM) delves into the world of the old masters. MIJN REMBRANDT has become ‘an epic art thriller’, in which the film maker gives a fascinating insight into what makes the work of the Dutch master so special and why his art touches people so deeply. In a cinematic mosaic of moving stories, the boundless passion for Rembrandt’s paintings leads to dramatic developments and surprising plot twists.

While we become part of the intimate bond between different enthusiasts and ‘their’ Rembrandt, the French baron Éric de Rothschild brings two Rembrandts on the market. This is the start of a fierce political struggle between the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre. The film also follows the aristocratic art dealer Jan Six if he appears to be tracking down not one but two ‘new’ paintings by Rembrandt. This nerve-racking voyage of discovery seems to make his biggest boy’s dream come true, but Hoogendijk’s camera is also there when his world threatens to collapse if he is accused of having broken an agreement with another art dealer.

MIJN REMBRANDT is ‘a beautiful ode to homegrown art’ (Vogue) and premiered at the IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) in a sold-out Royal Theater Carré.

The documentary will be shown with English subtitles.
