Enjoy Schumann’s expressive Violin Concerto and Beethoven’s dramatic Egmont: a musical masterpiece that embodies the power of resistance and triumph.
The German violinist Tobias Feldmann is a regular guest at the Residentie Orkest, and tonight, he brings with him the Violin Concerto by his compatriot Robert Schumann. This hidden gem of the Romantic genre is the only violin concerto that Schumann ever composed: an original, expressive work that explores the potential of the violin and the orchestra and contains one of the most beautiful slow passages of all time.
Principal guest conductor Richard Egarr also leads Beethoven’s Egmont, a work that is more relevant today than ever. Count Egmont stood up for the rights of the Dutch in their opposition to the king of Spain. His subsequent tragic death inspired Goethe to write a play for which Beethoven composed the music. The result is a significant and timeless tale with music that brings the narrative’s dramatic scenes and Egmont’s personality to life. A true Beethoven expert, Egarr’s keen interpretation precisely captures the piece’s power and expressiveness. Rita van Hengels produced a special translation of Goethe’s text for the Residentie Orkest, while Joris Smit, an actor with Het Nationale Theater, takes on the role of narrator. Also noteworthy is the return of soprano Nikki Treurniet with her beautiful lyrical voice.
In collaboration with Het Nationale Theater.
